You might be eligible for social security benefits (and disability social security benefits) IF you earned social security credits.

You must earn a certain number of credits to qualify for Social Security benefits.

The number of credits you need depends on your age when you apply and the type of benefit application.

No one needs more than 40 credits for any Social Security benefit.

The amount needed for a credit in 2018 is $1,320. You can earn a maximum of four credits for any year.

You might want to verify if you earned enough credits to qualify.

Let me know if you need any help with determination.

I really didn't get my question answered. I know that I qualify for a little social security. I need to know under what circumstances I can collect social security without endangering my CAL STRS benefits. I know that some retired teachers collecting CAL STRS benefits are also collecting social security benefits. Under what circumstances are we/they allowed to do that?

I need to know under what circumstances I can collect social security without endangering my CAL STRS benefits.

To qualify for social security benefits - you need to have 40 credits or 10 years working under social security system.

A pension based on earnings not covered by Social Security can affect the amount of your Social Security benefit. The Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) reduces your benefits.

HOWEVER

If you paid Social Security tax on 30 years of substantial earnings you are not affected by WEP

.

I know that some retired teachers collecting CAL STRS benefits are also collecting social security benefits. Under what circumstances are we/they allowed to do that?

You may collect teacher's retirement benefits AND social security benefits at the same time.

To qualify for social security benefits - you need 10 years of working under social security system

To qualify for not reduced social security benefits - you need 30 years of substantial earning.

Let me know if you need any clarification.
