Accountant's Assistant: The Retirement Accountant will know how to help. Please tell me more, so we can help you best.

My partner and I go married last august and we will need to file a joint return. He has been getting his social security (he is 68). However I started getting Social Security Disability last April. What is the cutoff for us to pay taxes on our combined social security?

Accountant's Assistant: These retirement benefits are supposed to help us but they can be so complicated! The Retirement Expert will help you get the most benefits properly. Is there anything else important you think the Retirement Accountant should know?

He earns 22,500.00 in social security and I get 22,704.00 in social security disibility.

Do either of you have any other income besides SSA benefits?

Ask Your Own Social Security Question
Social Security Expert: TaxRobin, Tax Preparer replied 4 months ago

If you do have other income then half your SSA or SSDI and all your other incomeis added to gethr to get your COMBINR+ED INCOME for tax purposes. If you file a joint return, and you and your spouse have a combined income * that is

  • between $32,000 and $44,000, you may have to pay income tax on up to 50 percent of your benefits
  • more than $44,000, up to 85 percent of your benefits may be taxable.
