Customer Question
HI. I'm gathering information...

HI. I'm gathering information using a checklist from Social Security to apply for my benefits. I turn 66 in July. Under the heading of Self-employment details for current year and prior 2-years they are asking for my "total net income." I'm not sure what to provide them with for an answer.

Accountant's Assistant: These retirement benefits are supposed to help us but they can be so complicated! The Retirement Expert will help you get the most benefits properly. Is there anything else important you think the Retirement Accountant should know?

My wife works but is probably going to retire in July 2018. She makes a high income. Our primary income after retirement will be from income properties we own (multifamily). I would prefer not to disclose any of that income to Social Security as my net income, but i'm not sure why they even need to know my income. I paid in, they told me what my benefits would be, now I am applying of the promised benefits.

Accountant's Assistant: When we are ready I'll take you to the appropriate web page.

Ok Thanks!

You will NOT include your wife's income on YOUR Social Security application.

Only report your income.

If you were self-employed - provide your net self-employment income.

If you were not self-employed - report zero or skip that question.

The SSA wants to verify that all your income was properly credited - and your benefits will be calculated correctly.

Let me know if you need any help.
