Hi. My name is ***** ***** I will be happy to help you.

If benefits based on your own records are higher than benefits based on your late husband's records than yes, you can switch to your own benefits anytime. But you cannot collect both, your own and your widow benefits at the same time.

Regarding the unemployment, every state has its own rules but generally yes you can collect social security and unemployment at the same time, however to qualify for unemployment you must be actively looking for a job and your unemployment benefits will be reduced by your social security benefits. If your social security benefits are 1500/per month and your unemployemt is 1600/month you will only receive 100.

I only collect my late husband's SS benefits - they are a little over $2200/mo. Can I collect unemployment?

If your unemployment benefits are more than your 2200/month, probably yes.

My unemployment would be approximately $1700. mo.- and my SS is $2200/mo - so you are saying no unemployment?
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
That is all I have.
Social Security Expert: emc011075, Tax Adviser replied 4 months ago

Every states has its own rules but most likely you will not get any unemployment benefits if your social security benefits are higher than your unemployment would be. Also, you will have to actively looking for a job and submit weekly reports.

There's a weekly exclusion, amount that does not count against your unemployment benefits, but it is usually no more than $30 or $50 per week.
