If you are divorced, but your marriage lasted 10 years or longer, you can receive benefits on your ex-spouse's record (even if they have remarried) if:

  • You are unmarried;
  • You are age 62 or older;
  • Your ex-spouse is entitled to Social Security retirement or disability benefits; and
  • The benefit you are entitled to receive based on your own work is less than the benefit you would receive based on your ex-spouse's work.

Your spousal benefits woudl be 50% of your spouse if you were started at your FRA - full retirement age which is 66.

As you started earlier - at age 35 - your spousal benefits woudl be 35.0% of the amount your spouse is receiving.

.

You will not be able to have your own benefits to grow 8% a year if you continue any benefits.

Only if you stop social security benefits - your own benefits will grow.

Sorry - that will not work if you continue spousal benefits.

Let me know if you need any help.
