Accountant's Assistant: The Retirement Accountant will know how to help. Is there anything else important you think the Retirement Accountant should know?

I 'm 62 going on 63. what else could I add to increase benefits ? I have paid in since I was a kid off land on. for years I didn't being a sub contractor.

Can he give me some of his quarters to increase my SS ?

social security quarters (or credits) may not be transferred - that is not correct interpretation.

HOWEVER

as a spouse you may qualify for spousal social security benefits based on your spouse's working record.

That is regardless if you do not have enough working quarters.

If you start your spousal benefits at your FRA - you woudl be getting 50% of your spouse's benefits,

But if you start earlier - your spousal benefits will be permanently reduced.

You may start as early as you turn 62.

Let me know if you need any help with determination.

I still am not understanding...Can I draw mine and up to 50% on his ?
Social Security Expert: lev-tax, Tax Advisor replied 3 months ago

You may not qualify for your own benefits if you do not have 40 credits.

But you may qualify for spousal benefits which at your FRA - are 50% of whatever your spouse received.

If you start before your FRA - that will be less than 50%.

No....I have enough credits....the question is...with his excess credits can he give some to me so we have better income
Social Security Expert: lev-tax, Tax Advisor replied 3 months ago

Sorry for confusion...

You originally wrote - I don't have quite enough - So I thought that your do not have enough credits...

social security quarters (or credits) may not be transferred - that is not correct interpretation.

Credits are used to determine eligibility - but actual benefits are calculated based on the lifetime earning - not just on credits.

If you will qualify for your own social security benefits - based on YOUR working record

and - for spousal benefits

- as a result - you may choose the larger of these two.
