Customer Question
I will turn 65...

I will turn 65 in August, 2018 and do not plan to collect Social Security benefits until I am 66.

Accountant's Assistant: These retirement benefits are supposed to help us but they can be so complicated! The Retirement Expert will help you get the most benefits propertly. Please tell me more, so we can help you best.

Somehow I hit "send" before I intended to!

Accountant's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Retirement Accountant should know?

My husband and I are both retired, and I am currently covered by his health insurance through the Carpenters Union. He and I will both be fully covered through June, 2019. He will turn 65 in July, 2019 at which time he plans to get insurance through Medicare. I do not know what I need to do about Medicare this year. I have heard that I need to sign up or possibly be penalized if I delay signing up, but I don't believe that I need Medicare coverage now since I am still going to be covered under my husband's plan. Can you advise me if I still need to contact Social Security/Medicare just because I am turning 65?

Welcome to Just Answer. My name is ***** ***** I will be happy to assist you.

Once you turn 65, you will want to apply for Medicare Part A.

If you are covered by your husband's plan, you can wait to apply for Medicare Part B, but keep in mind that as soon as your coverage ends through your husband's employer, you will want to apply as soon as possible.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you and best regards,

Barb

I thought Part A is for doctors/hospitals, and my understanding is that I will continue to have that coverage through my husband's medical plan. I thought Part B is for prescription coverage. My brief conversation this morning with the union medical office resulted in their advising me to sign up for Part B, which is exactly opposite your advice above. So I am really confused. Can I get official written information from Social Security on my options either by mail or via internet so I can read up on all of this? I want to be fully informed of my options well in advance of my 65th birthday.
