Customer Question
I was told yesterday...

I was told yesterday that I could re-apply for social security benefits and they may be increased substancially. I have been recieving social security since I was 63 and I am now going on 73. Is it true I may qualify for an increase from $650 to a larger amount if I re-apply now?

Accountant's Assistant: These retirement benefits are supposed to help us but they can be so complicated! The Retirement Expert will help you get the most benefits propertly. Is there anything else the Retirement Accountant should be aware of?

Not that I know of.

You may not "reapply" if you are already receiving benefits,

but it is always worth to verify if your benefits were calculated correctly.

-- you may be eligible for social security benefits based on your own working record AND based on your spouse's working record - so you may verify which benefits are better and select the largest;

-- in many situations - not all your earning were considered when benefits are calculated - I might suggest to get your earning record from the SSA and verify that all are correct and complete;

-- you also should get COLA adjustments every year - or almost every year - so verify these were calculated correctly.

You might want to contact the SSA directly - or may hire someone representing you.

Let me know your zip code and I will find a local SSA office serving your area.
