VerifiedYou may start social security benefits based on your age when your turn 62.
You may start earlier if you are disabled.
You will qualify as long as you have at least 40 credits.
However - your FRA - full retirement age is between 66 and 67 depending on your year of birth.
If you start benefits before reaching your FRA - your social security benefits will be permanently reduced.
In additional you should be aware of the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) - when you have also worked in noncovered employment, meaning that Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) Social Security payroll taxes were not paid; and, importantly, you have earned a pension in that noncovered job.
You may also qualify for social security benefits as a spouse - based on your spouse's working record.
However - these benefits might be subject to the Government Pension Offset (GPO). The GPO reduction is equal to two-thirds of the amount of the pension payment from noncovered government work.
