Hello, my name is***** goal is to give you a complete & accurate answer. I am working on your request now & I will respond as soon as possible.

Ask Your Own Social Security Question

I'm sorry to hear of your husband's illness. I know that this is a difficult time for you.

First of all, I need to know your husband's and your ages, and how long you have been married?

Do you have any dependents under age 18?

My husband just turned 62 and I just turned 59. I have no dependent children asult ages 26 & 28
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
Was married June 1983

Since your husband is currently receiving disability benefits, if he dies, you would be eligible to receive your Surviving Spouse benefits at age 60, 50 if you were disabled. Your Surviving Spouse benefits will equate to the benefit your husband is receiving at the time of his death.

However, depending upon your age at the time, you will want to consider your options if you are also eligible to collect Social Security Retirement benefits based upon your own earnings record.

Although you can collect on one earnings record at a time, you may be able to file & suspend your own benefits while collecting your Survivor Benefits allowing your own benefit to permanently increase through age 70. At that time you could compare the benefits and receive whichever is highest. After your husband dies, that would be the time to evaluate your options.

Let me know if you have any follow-up questions.

Please remember to rate my response as that is the only way the SITE

will credit me for assisting you today.

Thanks very much,

Steve G.

As stated I am not of retirement age and do I lose his benefit upon his death? I read the basics but someone said that I would still receive some benefits

I'll restate the rule as I noted above:

Since your husband is currently receiving disability benefits, if he dies, you would be eligible to receive your Surviving Spouse benefits at age 60, 50 if you were disabled.

So, if your husband should die before your turn 60, you would lose his benefit until you reached age 60, at which time you would be eligible to receive the benefit he was receiving when he died. So, since you are 59 there could be a small gap in benefits if your husband should die before you turn 60.

Does that clarify it for you or can I explain any further?
