Hi. My name’s Lane …

I hold a law degree (J.D.), with concentration in Tax Law, Estate law & Corporate law, an MBA in finance, a BBA, and CFP & CRPS (Chartered Retirement Plans Specialist) designations, as well - I’ve been providing financial, Social Security/Medicare, estate, corporate, non-profit, and tax advice, to clients on three continents, since 1986.

Bear with me a moment while I type up my response. Then if you have further questions we can go from there.

The way Social Security works, several benefits exist.

Your own work record benefit and SEVERAL ancillary benefits (benefits based on another's record)

  • Spousal benefits (1/2 of the other spouses work record benefit)
  • Survivor benefits (71.5 to 100% of the deceased's work record benefit - depending on the age you start the benefit)
  • Dependent benefits for minors
  • Dependent for a spouse caring for minors
  • And more (such as disability benefits)

...

And Social Security will always pay the highest of any benefit to which we may be entitled.

...

But we cannot "stack benefits," as Social Security calls it.

...

They will always take us up TO any higher benefit for which we're eligible, by paying a combination of the benefits, by we can't have one benefit and then add another.

...

If your mother only worked sporadically, then his ow work record would be the higher benefit.
