I will be 62 in May. How do I start getting my social security $$$ then?

You can apply for Social Security retirement benefits when you are at least 61 years and 9 months of age.

You should apply three months before you want your benefits to start.

I work part time as a substitute teacher earning about $1000 a month. Can I continue doing that?

You can get Social Security retirement benefits and work at the same time. However, if you are younger than full retirement age and make more than the yearly earnings limit, the SSA will reduce your benefit.

The SSA will use the following earnings limits to reduce your benefits: If you are under full retirement age for the entire year, they will deduct $1 from your benefit payments for every $2 you earn above the annual limit.

For 2018 that limit is $17,040.

Starting with the month you reach full retirement age, you can get your benefits with no limit on your earnings.

If you were born i n 1956 - your full retirement age is 66 years and 4 months.

Let me know if you need any help.
