Customer Question
I am a widower...

I am a widower, lost my wife 2003, who receives SS. For a time I received survivor benefits. If I remarry now, will my new wife get benefits when I die?

Accountant's Assistant: These retirement benefits are supposed to help us but they can be so complicated! The Retirement Expert will help you get the most benefits propertly. Please tell me more, so we can help you best.

I've been receiving benefits since I was 66. I am now 74. My prospective new wife is 30. We actually don't plan to marry, unless there is a benefit.

Accountant's Assistant: Is there anything else the Retirement Accountant should be aware of?

I don't think so. Would she have any claim to survivor benefits from my passing?

Several different issues here:

...

If one remarries after they turn sixty, the earliest a survivor benefit can be received, he/she still continues to receives the benefit.

...

If they do marry, but that marriage ends, by death divorce or annulment, they become entitled to the same benefit at THAT time. (although their own benefit may be higher, an we cannot "stack benefits," we can only receive the highest benefit availble)

...

In terms your specific question, yes, a new wife, once she turns 62, can receive a spousal benefit (50% of your normal retirement benefit, reduced for taking early, of would be a full 50% at her own full retirement age, age 67 for someone age 30 today).

....

Should you die, however, as long as you were married for nine months, she would receive YOUR survivor benefit at age 60 (71.5% of your benefit increasing steadily to a full 100% of your benefit for every year she wait to take until her full retirement age, age 67)
