Do you answer questions about Social Security benefits based on IRMAA? I am currently retired and collecting payments.

Accountant's Assistant: These retirement benefits are supposed to help us but they can be so complicated! The Retirement Expert will help you get the most benefits propertly. Please tell me more, so we can help you best.

I retired May 2017. My benefit amount as decreased because of IRMAA based on my 2016 taxes where I worked full time for a year. This year with only full time imployment for 6 months I made less than 85000 so I should not have to have the extra IRMAA deducte4d from my SS amount.

Accountant's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Retirement Accountant should know?

I went in to my ss office in May to prove this for 2017. Now I get a letter for 2018 and I am back to square one where I have NO work earnings so am making less than in 2017. The letter stating this was sent to me 1/22/17

First Social Security Doesn't get tax returns from IRS until they're essentially two years old. Taxes for 2016 are due in April, but the with the 6 month extension that's allowed IRS does get everything until October, and of course doesn't complete processing them the until 2017.

...

So what Social Security is working with is your 2016 return at best, ***** ***** 2015

...

Yes, not done yet, but yes, here

What you'll need to do is take your signed 2016 return into the office and document your lower earnings.

What you'll see on page 3 of this document is the following:

...

https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10536.pdf

...

"To determine your 2017 income-related monthly adjustment amounts, we use your most recent federal tax return the IRS provides to us. Generally, this information is from a tax return filed in 2016 for tax year 2015. Sometimes, the IRS only provides information from a return filed in 2015 for tax year 2014. If we use the 2014 tax year data, and you filed a return for tax year 2015 or did not need to file a tax return for tax year 2015, call us or visit any local Social Security office. We’ll update our records."

plus a termination of employment for 5/1/17 which I no longer have. They know my 2016 info because this is what they are basing this on.
They need my 2017 info which of course is not available yet
Social Security Expert: Lane, JD,CFP, MBA, CRPS replied 7 months ago

They would not yet have 2016 tax information unless you provided it

Due date for 2016 is October 17 ... just now finalizing processing

The process for this is as follows:

....

• Reconsideration;

• Hearing by an administrative law judge;

• Review by the Appeals Council; and

• Federal Court review.

...

But again, if you DID provide 2016 tax information, they should have used it, and you'll need to do the reconsideration if they did not change and simply sent a letter.

...

If this WAS a formal reconsideration, you'll need to go to the next step

...

Did you use this form?

I've given you accurate and thorough information.

...

Now you're asking me to work for free.

...

Di you or did you not send a 2016 tax return?

...

If you did not I can help you with the next step

...

If you did, I can help you with the next step

...

Also, it would help to know whether you did a life changing event form or a reconsideration form or neither
