My husband receives a state pension as a retired police officer. I am his beneficiary. We are wondering if he dies will his pension which I get affect my social security?

I can retire in two years on social security. We get a pension from his job which I will continue to get in the event of his death. Will my social security benefit be reduced?

Accountant's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Retirement Accountant should know?

Don't think so

Welcome to Just Answer. My name is ***** ***** I will be happy to assist you.

Benefits for widows, widowers and other survivors may be reduced because of a rule called the Government Pension Offset (GPO). Under the GPO, those benefits will be cut by two-thirds of a pension you receive from a federal, state or local government job in which you were not required to pay Social Security taxes.

Example: If you get a $600 pension, two thirds or $400 must be deducted from your Social Security payment. Thus if you're eligible for a $500 spouse's, widow's, or widower's benefit, you will receive only $100 a month from Social Security ($500 - $400 = $100).

BUT there is an exception.

if you paid Social Security taxes on your own earnings for 60 months (5 years) or more during the period beginning January 1988 and ending with the first month of entitlement to benefits.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you and best regards,

Barb

I have paid social security on my income for the past five years. His income which is a pension would be income to me if he were deceased since it is a pension. He did not pay social security on a retirement pension. I would retire at full retirement age and if something happened to him I would get his pension of about 30000 a year our question is would this affect my social security income?
Social Security Expert: Barbara, Enrolled Agent replied 2 months ago

No. Because you meet the exception rule.

You have paid Social Security taxes on YOUR OWN EARNINGS for 5 years or more during the period from January 1988 and ending with the 1st month you are entitled to Social Security benefits.
