Customer Question
I am retiring on...

I am retiring on January 31, 2018 at full retirement age (66). My husband, who made 4 times as much as I have, started collecting early at approximately age 63. Is there a way I could claim part of his payment as opposed to retiring on my own earnings. If so, how do I find out which amount would be greater?

Accountant's Assistant: These retirement benefits are supposed to help us but they can be so complicated! The Retirement Expert will help you get the most benefits propertly. Is there anything else the Retirement Accountant should be aware of?

I don't think so.

If you are entitled to both social benefits - based on your own working record AND as a spouse - generally you will be getting the larger of these - but not both benefits at the same time.

As a spouse - at your FRA you are entitled to 50% of benefits your spouse is receiving.

Your own benefits are calculated based on your working history.

Specifically - the SSA will adjust or “index” your actual earnings to account for changes in average wages since the year the earnings were received.

Then Social Security calculates your average indexed monthly earnings during the 35 years in which you earned the most.

They apply a formula to these earnings and arrive at your basic benefit, or “primary insurance amount” - PIA

You may do calculation on your own or - that might easier - communicate with the SSA and verify.

Let me know if you need any help with calculations.
