I have an adult child who is 25 years old. If social security determines that he is disabled can my child receive SSI and still be my dependent if I provide more than half of his support (say SSI paymnets would be about $9,000) and I pay an addititional $11,000 to support my child who lives at home with me?

Hi. My name is ***** ***** I will be happy to help you.

With SSI do you mean social security disability payments or Supplemental security income (type of welfare benefits)?

Ask Your Own Social Security Question

Generally, the disability determination has to be made by his doctor but social security make the determination based on doctor's recommendation so receiving social security disability benefits can be used as a proof of disability.

If your child is permanently and totally disabled (as determined by his physician), he can be your dependent regardless of his income as long as he does not pay more than 50% of his own support. There's a worksheet you should use and keep in your records: https://apps.irs.gov/app/vita/content/globalmedia/teacher/worksheet_for_determining_support_4012.pdf

it is SSI. Without going through the worksheet under the scenario (9k from SSI and 11k additional support from me) I have outlined -- would I be able to claim him as a dependent? Disabled child has no savings and does not work.

SSI is a need based benefit. It means that the recipient must have limited income and limited resources. If you claim him as your dependent, your support and fair market value of the lodging you are providing will be counted as his resource and he will lose his benefits.

As long as his physical determines that he is permanently and totally disabled and he does not pay more than 50% of his own support you can claim him as your dependent.

furthemore -- would SSI payments to the child be reduced because parents pay 11k to support the disabled child?

If you claim him as your dependent he may lose his SSI benefits entirely, depending on your support.

Ask Your Own Social Security Question

Your 11K support will be counted towards his SSI income/resources.

if all this 11k from a parent go toward medical expenses for the child would it still be counted toward SSI support?

Expenses paid by others (for medical or utilities) does not count as support for SSI purposes. But food and lodging you are providing to him for free is considered deemed/in-kind income to him for SSI purposes.

thank you. Can you provide the link regarding medical/utilities being not counted toward SSI support?

Sure. https://www.ssa.gov/ssi/text-income-ussi.htm

Under "what income does not count for SSI", 12th from the top: "money someone else spends to pay your expenses for items other than food or shelter (for example, someone pays your telephone or medical bills)"
