Hi. My name's Lane.

I hold a law degree (J.D.), with concentration in Tax Law, Estate law & Corporate law, an MBA in finance, a BBA, and CFP & CRPS (Chartered Retirement Plans Specialist) designations, as well - I’ve been providing financial, Social Security/Medicare, estate, corporate, non-profit, and tax advice, on three continents, since 1986

...

She is entitled to the spousal benefit (50% of your PIA - your retirement benefit at your full retirement age). However the spousal benefit will be reduced below 50% if she does not wait until her own Full Retirement Age (age 66 if born 1954 or before) to take that spousal benefit.

...

The spousal benefit can be as much as half of the worker's "primary insurance amount," depending on the spouse's age at retirement. If the spouse begins receiving benefits before "normal (or full) retirement age," the spouse will receive a reduced benefit. However, if a spouse is caring for a qualifying child, the spousal benefit is not reduced.

...

If a spouse is eligible for a retirement benefit based on his or her own earnings, and if that benefit is higher than the spousal benefit, then SSA will pay the retirement benefit. Otherwise we pay the spousal benefit.

...

Here's an excellent calculator for looking at the numbers, assuming different start dates for the spousal benefit:

if i'm correct, my wife can claim benefits against me.
that benefit will be increased as per her work history to her when she reaches 66.
Social Security Expert: Lane, JD,CFP, MBA, CRPS replied 7 months ago

What you're talking about is filing a restricted application, for spousal benefits only. The bipartisan budget agreement took that away for all (BUT those born Jan 1 1954 can still do that IF they are Full Retirement Age.
