I am a 61 yr old disabled woman. I live with my 86 yr old mother. She claims me as a dependent on her tax returns. I do receive SS Disability income of my own. My question is Should my mother pass away will I be able to receive any of her benefits.

There can be a survivor benefit if you were disabled before age 22 and are unmarried. See this from SSA here:

https://www.ssa.gov/planners/survivors/ifyou4.html

...

If you are the unmarried child under 18 (up to age 19 if attending elementary or secondary school full time) of a worker who dies, you can be eligible to receive Social Security survivor benefits.

And you can get benefits at any age if you were disabled before age 22 and remain disabled.

I became disabled much later than age 18. Are there any other benefits that I would be eligible to receive as her dependent?
She claims me as a dependent on her tax returns and has for years

I cannot afford the "call me " option
Social Security Expert: Lane, JD,CFP, MBA, CRPS replied 8 months ago

I'm so sorry, not from Social Security (on her record) - although the disability must have begun before age 22, not 18:

(disregard the call me option... that's something that the site throws up there (not from me)

If the disability onset was before age 22, and you are still disabled, there is a survivor benefit.

Disability began after 22. So, I will receive no additional benefits as her dependent?
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
How does that work? How do they calculate that and is it a one time payment?
Social Security Expert: Lane, JD,CFP, MBA, CRPS replied 8 months ago

This is a monthly payment. See this from SSA here: https://www.ssa.gov/planners/disability/dqualify10.html

"Adults Disabled Before Age 22

An adult disabled before age 22 may be eligible for child's benefits if a parent is deceased or starts receiving retirement or disability benefits. We consider this a "child's" benefit because it is paid on a parent's Social Security earnings record.

The "adult child"—including an adopted child, or, in some cases, a stepchild, grandchild, or step grandchild—must be unmarried, age 18 or older, and have a disability that started before age 22.

Example: A worker starts collecting Social Security retirement benefits at age 62. He has a 38-year old son who has had cerebral palsy since birth. The son will start collecting a disabled "child's" benefit on his father's Social Security record."

From that same page, see this:

...

What if the adult child is already receiving disability benefits on his or her own record?

An adult child already receiving disability benefits should still check to see if benefits may be payable on a parent's earnings record.

It is possible for an individual disabled since childhood to attain insured status on his or her own record and be entitled to higher benefits on a parent's record.

The total depends on your benefit amount and the number of family members who also qualify on your record. The total varies, but generally the total amount you and your family can receive is about 150 to 180 percent of your disability benefit.
