I get monthly SSDI for $1,309.00. I took out $15,491 from my IRA. I also got approximately $5,000.00 in spousal support. Can you tell me if Social Security will penalize me and how much?

Accountant's Assistant: The Retirement Accountant will know how to help. Please tell me more, so we can help you best.

What else do you need to know?

Accountant's Assistant: Is there anything else the Retirement Accountant should be aware of?

Yes. In 2017, I paid $2,504 for dental work, $667.00 for prescriptions, and approximately $500 in medical bills. I also moved.

Alimony is considered unearned income by SSA. The amount of SSDI benefits you receive is based on how much money you earned when you worked. As a result, the amount of alimony you receive after a divorce is not relevant to your SSDI.

IRA distributions are not counted either.

I was told my distribution from my IRA is counted as income against my SSDI benefits. I'm 56 years old and not retirement age
Social Security Expert: TaxRobin, Tax Preparer replied 5 months ago

That is retirement , let me double check.....................................

Ask Your Own Social Security Question
Social Security Expert: TaxRobin, Tax Preparer replied 5 months ago

No, everything I saw before was correct. As long as you've worked long enough to be eligible to receive disability benefits and you are unable to generate income from work over a relatively low threshold amount, then you can take IRA distributions and still get full disability benefits at the same time.

SSI would be effected but not SSDI

Ask Your Own Social Security Question
Social Security Expert: TaxRobin, Tax Preparer replied 5 months ago

For tax purposes yes. You must report both and some of your SSDI may be taxable but your benefits themself are not changed.

Were you asking about tax or the amount of SSDI you can get?

I do not know anything about payments. Do you want to speak to Customer Support?

Social Security Expert: TaxRobin, Tax Preparer replied 5 months ago

Your alimony and IRA are $20491 then half of your SSDI is $7854.

That is added to get your COMBINED Income ($28345)

No one pays federal income tax on more than 85 percent of his or her Social Security benefits based on Internal Revenue Service (IRS) rules. If you:

  • file a federal tax return as an "individual" and your combined income* is
    • between $25,000 and $34,000, you may have to pay income tax on up to 50 percent of your benefits.
    • more than $34,000, up to 85 percent of your benefits may be taxable.

Can I have a write off for my dental, medical and prescription costs as well as my moving cost?
Social Security Expert: TaxRobin, Tax Preparer replied 5 months ago

I used standard deduction because those amounts you listed do not add up to be enough to benefit you and the Stab=ndard deduction is higher.

Moving cost....did you move to work at a new location? If not then no.
