I am currently receiving partial survivor benefits for $1,456 I will be turning 66 end of this month I have worked continuously until last year when I was laid off I earned over $43,000 dollars and believed benefits were determined by earnings however when I checked with social security office was told benefit from my record would only be $1300 wondering how is it possible to be getting less from a full benefit then from a partial benefit on my husband's record?

Many people wonder how we figure their Social Security retirement benefit. We base Social Security benefits on your lifetime earnings.

The SSA will adjust or “index” your actual earnings to account for changes in average wages since the year the earnings were received.

Then Social Security calculates your average indexed monthly earnings during the 35 years in which you earned the most.

They apply a formula to these earnings and arrive at your basic benefit, or “primary insurance amount” - PIA

So - YOUR social security benefits are based on YOUR working record.

In your situation - you may delay your own benefits and switch later.

If you do so - your won benefits will increase 8% for each year you delay - up to age 70.

Meanwhile you may continue with survivor benefits and will switch to your own when they become larger.
