Customer Question
Hello, my husband and...

Hello, my husband and I are retired. We had adopted a special needs child eleven years ago. We recieved a check for him from Social Security as a dependent. He is now 19 and is a senior in high school. That check stopped in March 2017. We have been told by our office in Wisconsin Rapids that we will be receiving that money until he graduates in the spring of 2018. Why did it stop and the man at out office said we are certainly still eligible for it.

Accountant's Assistant: The Retirement Accountant will know how to help. Is there anything else important you think the Retirement Accountant should know?

I don't know. I will provide any information that is needed.

When you qualify for Social Security retirement benefits, your children may also qualify to receive benefits on your record. Your eligible child can be your biological child, adopted child or stepchild. A dependent grandchild may also qualify.

.

To receive benefits, the child must:
•be unmarried; and
•be under age 18; or
•be 18-19 years old and a full-time student (no higher than grade 12); or
•be 18 or older and disabled from a disability that started before age 22.

.

So because your child was a full-time high school student - he was eligible for benefits till age 19 - instead of 18,

But unless he is disabled - these benefits will not be paid after 19.

Ok, he is 19 and enrolled and attending high school as a senior. He is disabled and lives at home with us.
Social Security Expert: lev-tax, Tax Advisor replied 10 months ago

If he is disabled - he will continue to receive social security benefits.
In this case - you will need to contact the SSA and provide documents to proof disability.

Most likely - you will need an appointment in the SSA office.

Let me know your zip code and I will find a local office serving your area.

We have done all that months ago. They know all the facts and have ample proof of his disabilities. We have no idea what the hold up is. No one does. At the office here they have no answer as to why this is stymied.
Social Security Expert: lev-tax, Tax Advisor replied 10 months ago

I may not know for sure - but seems the SSA made a mistake to mark your son as a high school student - and that is why benefits ended when he turned 19.

It sounds as in the SSA system - he is not classified as disabled.

You will need to contact the SSA and ask to correct that mistake.

If they have all required documents - that should not be an issue.
