How do I determine if receiving SS benefits from my deceased husband's account is an advantage over my social security benefits?

Yes, it is true. But the only way to find out if benefits based on his records would be higher than benefits based on your records is to visit your local social security. You cannot apply for widow benefits online.

Just for the clarification, you cannot get benefits from his account. Social security benefits are not transferable or inheritable, the benefits die with the beneficiary. If you were married for at least 9 month you are eligible for widow benefits based on his records, not his benefits. You may be eligible for up to 100% what the amount he was getting at the time of his death, depending when you applied for your benefits.
