Customer Question
I am a 64-year-old...

I am a 64-year-old retired teacher of 28 years and collecting my PERA. I have very limited Social Security but my SS statement indicates that I would collect $280 per month. However, I have also been told by friends that my PERA will negate my Social Security through something called the Windfall. I have also been told that I would be able to collect my husband

Accountant's Assistant: The Retirement Accountant will know how to help. Is there anything else important you think the Retirement Accountant should know?

I accidentally pushed send too soon. I guess I just need to know how my husband's SS plays a role in what I might collect. I do not plan on collecting until 72, or whenever I am required. Thank you Amy Treese

I'm so sorry, but it's POSSIBLE that both the WEP (Windfall Elimination Provision) and the GPO (Government Pension Offset) could reduce or eliminate both your own SSA benefit (WEP) and your ancillary benefits as well (Spousal benefit & Survivor benefit - GPO)

...

The WEP is a fairly complicated formula that reduces one factor of your benefit. But the WEP is limited to 1/2 of your non-covered pension PERA, so it may not completely eliminate your own benefit.

...

You can see exactly how the WEP is calculated here:https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/wep-chart.html

...

And you can estimate it's effect here: https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/anyPiaWepjs04.html

...

The GPO is much more straightforward: It reduces either the spousal benefit, a benefit available while your spouse is alive, (normally 1/2 of your spouses work record benefit) or the survivor benefit (the 71.5% to 100% of deceased spouse's benefit) by 2/3 of your non-covered pension.

...

As an example if the survivor or spousal benefit is, say 1000 and your PERA is 1200, then your Social Security benefit would be reduced by 400. As you can see... so sorry .. if your PERA is large enough, it could reduce the spousal or survivor benefit completely.

Please let me know if you have ANY questions at all, Amy, before rating me.

If this has helped, and you DON’T have other questions … I'd appreciate a positive rating (using the stars or faces on your screen, and then clicking “submit")

I hope that you’ll rate me based on my accuracy and thoroughness, rather than any good news/bad news content.

That’s the only way JustAnswer.com will compensate me for the work here.

Thanks,

Lane
