Customer Question
I was married for...

I was married for 19 years. We divorced after 19 years and he has passed away. I have remarried. My question is...can I receive his social security benefits? Thank you.

Accountant's Assistant: These retirement benefits are supposed to help us but they can be so complicated! The Retirement Expert will help you get the most benefits propertly. Please tell me more, so we can help you best.

I'm not sure what else to say. Married in 1974 and divorced in 1993. I remarried in 1994 and am still married. Is it possible to receive my former husband's social security benefits? He is now deceased.

Accountant's Assistant: Is there anything else the Retirement Accountant should be aware of?

No, I have no idea what that would be.

I'm so sorry. You cannot receive survivor benefits unless you remarried AFTER age 60 (th earliest age that one can TAKE survivor benefits).

...

SO, again, if you did not remarry until after age 60 (because you also fulfill the other requirement, having been married for ten years or more), then yes, you are entitled to survivor benefits.

...

Also, if you subsequent marriage ends (and you DID re-marry before age 60) then you would THEN - after a death, divorce or annulment - again be eligible for the survivor benefit

I hope that you’ll rate me based on my accuracy and thoroughness, rather than any good news/bad news content.

That’s the only way JustAnswer.com will compensate me for the work here.
