My friend is a widow. She has not received any of her husband's SS money. Does she have to wait until she is 66.5 years old? She was told she was not eligible because of "a law". Her husband was receiving 100% disability due to ALS. Thanks

I am sorry to hear this;

A widow is entitled to survivor's benefits once they reach age 60 -that information is here:

https://www.ssa.gov/planners/survivors/onyourown2.html

If one claims at age 60, they receive reduced benefits; if they wait until full retirement age then they will receive the full stipend.

Please see these calculations:

https://www.ssa.gov/planners/survivors/survivorchartred.html

For parties that remarried please see:

https://secure.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0300207003
