My husband passed away earlier this month at the age of 63.

Customer Question
My husband passed away...

My husband passed away earlier this month at the age of 63. He started collecting this past July. I am retired and NOT collecting SS, my age is 64. Am I entitled to part of his benefit until I reach 66 and then collect on my SS

Accountant's Assistant: These retirement benefits are supposed to help us but they can be so complicated! The Retirement Expert will help you get the most benefits propertly. Is there anything else the Retirement Accountant should be aware of?

My benefit at 66 will be higher than my husbands. I don't want to jeopardize collecting on my own at 66.

You might want to start surviving spouse benefits - that will be 100% of his benefits - but will be reduced based on when you started.
At the same time - you may delay your own benefits will 66 (your FRA - full retirement age) or ever longer - till 70 and let them grow.

What you might be concerned - if you are still working - there is a limit on your earning - if you are younger than full retirement age and make more than the yearly earnings limit, the SSA will reduce your benefit. That is regardless what type of benefits you are getting.

For 2017 that limit is $16,920.

Let me know if you need any clarification this matter.
