I have a question...

I have a question and would appreciate an expert opinion. I am currently receiving Social Security and started at age 66 (DOB is 9/4/47). My wife will turn 62 on November 15, 2017. I have been told she can file for social security benefits for herself at that time or shortly thereafter and receive 1/2 of what I get or higher amount if hers is more than that. We do not think it will be. Her DOB is 11/15/55. What can we do or should we do at this time?

Accountant's Assistant: These retirement benefits are supposed to help us but they can be so complicated! The Retirement Expert will help you get the most benefits propertly. Is there anything else important you think the Retirement Accountant should know?

No that is the question of the day!

Because your year of birth is 1947 - your FRA - full retirement age is 66 and you are eligible for reduced social security benefits.

You may continue your benefits.

But because your wife will start her social security benefits - you will be eligible for spousal benefits based on her working record.
At this point - you may may receive the larger of your and spousal benefits (which are 50% of whatever your wife is entitled.
Correspondingly - your spouse may choose social security benefits based on her own working record OR spousal benefits based on your working record - and will be entitled in larger of these.

But no one may receive two benefits at the same time.

Let me know if any clarification needed.
