Hi. My name is ***** ***** I will be happy to help you.

Your first wife did not take your benefits. She is receiving her benefits based on your records. She is entitled to benefits based on your records because you were married for more than 10 years. Your second spouse is eligible for benefits based on your records too: spousal benefits and survivor benefits as well. Both of them can receive benefits based on your records independently and your first wife's benefits will not affect your second wife's benefit in any way. After you die BOTH of them will be eligible for survivor benefits because they will not be sharing your benefits. Each will receive her own survivor benefits based on your records.

Please reply in a way that i may understand---How long must i be married to my second wife before she receives survivor benefits if i die??? How much will she receive??? I receive about $3,550 from social security now--having begun receiving my benefits at age 70.
Social Security Expert: emc011075, Tax Adviser replied 11 months ago

You asked if she will be eligible, not how much she will get.

You need to be married for 9 month for her to receive spousal or survivor benefits.

If your wife waits until her full retirement age to apply, she will be eligible for 50% of 3550 for spousal benefits and if you die, 100% of what you will be receiving at the time of your death. If she applies before her full retirement age all of her benefits will be permanently reduced by about .5% for every month she will apply before her full retirement age.
