Customer Question
Can someone posing as...

Can someone posing as me (who knows my social security number) have my pension diverted to their own account without my knowledge or will SS notify me at once of the change?

Accountant's Assistant: These retirement benefits are supposed to help us but they can be so complicated! The Retirement Expert will help you get the most benefits propertly. Please tell me more, so we can help you best.

I just need to know if anyone who knows my social security number could divert it into their own account without my knowledge or would SS notify me that someone is attempting to do this.

Accountant's Assistant: Is there anything else the Retirement Accountant should be aware of?

No. It is just a question I have due to the fact that my ex knows my Social Security number and would possibly attempt to get my pension.

Hi. My name is ***** ***** I will be happy to help you.

The social security will not notify you but to apply for benefits the person would need more than just your social security number. The social security has a verification process in place to verify the identity of the applicant.

If you were married for more than 10 years your ex is eligible to receive benefits based on your records and there's nothing you can do about it. She does not even need your social security number. All she needs is your marriage license and divorce decree and her ID.

I hope it never happens, but what does happen if someone steals my social security number?
Social Security Expert: emc011075, Tax Adviser replied 8 months ago

If someone has your social security number, your date of birth and current address, a person can apply for a credit card, a loan or even file a tax return and claim bogus refund. If you suspect that somebody may misuse your social security number, you should check your credit report frequently, put a security lock on your credit reports (by contacting all three credit agencies) and in case somebody try to file a tax return you can also request an identity protection pin from the IRS.

You cannot prevent somebody to use your social security number to work in US illegally but you can check your earnings online and if you notice something strange, contact the social security.
