Customer Question

I have been on disability retirement with the state of ohio since 2005 due to Parkinson disease. My wife has been working for our public school system for 13 years. Can she receive any social security benefit if or when she may need to stay home with me permanently? She worked unde social secrity for about 8 yesrs and I did for about 8 years
JA: These retirement benefits are supposed to help us but they can be so complicated! The Retirement Expert will help you get the most benefits propertly. Is there anything else important you think the Retirement Accountant should know?
Customer: I dont' know. Will need to be asked first.

Hello, I would like to assist you with your question. In short, benefits are only for the disabled party. If your spouse elects to cease working, she will not be eligible for any benefits just because she has made a voluntary choice due to your disability.

However, you might be eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), if you have limited assets and resources. Your spouse's retirement accounts do not count against your SSI.
