I am on Disability, likely permanent, due to MS. I am 56

Customer Question

I am on Disability, likely permanent, due to MS. I am 56 years old and have been getting social security payments, approx 2000 a month around the time my husband passed away of cancer in Jan of 2013. I now would like to remarry, but am afraid I won't receive the SS payments if I do. Would you please advise me?

Hi. Great Question.

It appears that you are remarrying after age 50 and you’re disabled - this qualified you to still get benefit payments based on your former spouse’s work.

Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you. *****

What about my prior work, will any more come to me when I turn 65 (or whatever the age is I become eligibile)

In addition, will the amount of my benefit change after I marry?

Hi. Also at age 62 or older, you can get benefits on your new spouse’s work, if those benefits would be higher.

If your social security is more than your survivor's benefits, you will be able to shift over to yours.
