The Privacy Act of 1974, as amended at 5 U.S.C. 552a, protects your vital records, including yor social security number.


The Privacy Act prohibits disclosure of these records without written individual consent unless one of the twelve disclosure exceptions enumerated in the Act applies.


You can PROVIDE your social security number to the finance dept of a company so that they can check your credit, for the purpose of providing financing, but stores don't have acces TO your social security number without your permission, and without your providing to TO them
