Unemployment benefits are paid to people who’ve lost their jobs and actively looking and available for a new job.
If the person applies for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits - that is an indication that person unable to work - and in this case woudl NOT qualify for unemployment benefits.Regular social security benefits (not disability) woudl not prevent unemployment benefits.
However in Illinois - the social security offset reduces an individual’s weekly unemployment benefits by an amount equal to 50% of his/her social security retirement benefits.
So unemployment insurance CAN be claimed while on social security - but unemployment insurance benefits might be reduced if the person received social security benefits at the same time.
