Customer Question

In my divorce agreement it states that I am entitled to half of my husbands Social Security when he retires. He retired 2 years ago and I have not collected a penny from it so far. How do I get what I deserve after being married to him for 40 years?

Hello

SSA pays benefits to divorced spouses. You can apply for those benefits through SSA.

SSA advises:

Your benefit as a divorced spouse is equal to one-half of your ex-spouse's full retirement amount (or disability benefit) if you start receiving benefits at your full retirement age.
