What does section 207 mean in terms of fines against persons

Customer Question

What does section 207 mean in terms of fines against persons with no other income than SSA and SSI? My son, whose only income is $750/mo in SSA and SSI, was fined $400 and jailed for 10 days for failure to comply regarding an incident involving shoplifting a can of soda.

Hi from Just Answer. I'm PDtax, and can assist.

Section 207 of the Social Security Act protects benefits from garnishment at the source for claims like this one. It means he will receive his entire benefit payment. He can then make his restitution payments as ordered.
