I turned 62 on July 21, 2013. At that time i thought it best to wait until age 66 to start my Social Security payments. Now I think I made a mistake. Is it possible to start payments now or do I have to wait until I'm 66?

retirementlawyer :

you can apply for social security at anytime after age 62, the only issue is that at age 66, you would not face an early penalty, or earnings limit,

retirementlawyer :

if you take benefits at age 65 your penalty would be limited, compared to if you had taken it at age 62, at 62, a 30% penalty would have been given to you,

retirementlawyer :

at 65, a 8% penalty would be given,

retirementlawyer :

at 66 no early penalty,

retirementlawyer :

You can file online through the social security website.
