Hello, A parent can receive SS for a child as long as they are still in high school up to the age of 19. The benefit after 18 would usually be in the childs name unless disabled. If the child no longer lives with the father I can see where you would want the child to receive the benefit directly but if he still providing a home for the child than the social part of the situation gets complicated. Legally he gets the check in the childs name after 18 and the grandson can call Social Security and ask that the check be deposited in his bank account instead of the fathers. You can contact Social Security at http://www.socialsecurity.gov/pgm/services.htm. It is also very important to notify Social Security at least a month before he gets out of school as his last check will be the month before he leaves school or graduates and if he does not report it he will have to repay the later benefits. He will need to call himself at the number provided and change bank accounts. You can go in person but it is not necessary. He will have to do it himself since he is 18 but you can go with him.

You do not have to reverse the papers you just have to change where the money goes, the papers he signed would have been so he would still get a benefit. More than likely the money is currently going into the fathers bank account, if you change the bank account where the benefit is deposited your grandson will access to the money.
