Briggs 190cc 675 series...

Briggs 190cc 675 series engine, smoke coming out of top of motor where pull starter is and also have oil present on the bottom 3 cyl head bolts too. No smoke coming out of muffler. Thoughts?

Other than it being a 190cc 675 series no I don't know. It's mounted on a Snapper Walk behind. Manufactured in 2/09, but only has about 15 hours on engine since new.

Hi, I will be glad to try to help you.

First. the model Type and code number is stamped into the engine cover. Sometimes it is stamped above the spark plug.... sometimes it is stamped over the muffler. and sometimes it is on top of the cylinder on the metal engine cover.

Some possibilities for the problem you are having is:

1. There is a MOUSE NEST under the engine cover on top of the cylinder that is getting too hot and is smoking just before it catches fire. This happens very often when a unit is stored for a period of time. You will have to remove the engine cover to get all of this mouse nest out. This is the most likely possibility.

2. There is a leaking oil seal on top of the engine on the crankshaft. The oil may be getting hot and smoking. The engine cover would have to be removed as well as the flywheel to get to the oil seal.

These are the most likely possibilities.

No leak from crank seal or mouse nest. I did notice oil residue on case ventilation tube to carb and also around vent tube manifold where it bolts to case.

Oil level is fine. I had replaced air filter yesterday prior to noticing the smoke.
I have noticed that there is oil on the bottom 3 head bolts ..... thoughts?Also, this mower has not been tipped on its side

Usually if the two things I mentioned are not the problem, then usually the problem is either there is too much oil in the unit.... or... someone has tipped the mower on it's side.

The ONLY way you can tip one of these is by pushing the handle down so the front wheels are raised off the ground.... so the spark plug is toward the sky.

If it is EVER tipped on it's side, it will cause oil to come out of the air breather tube and will also smoke..

In addition .... you should check the AIR FILTER. If it is saturated with oil, then it will also cause this issue.

Sometimes a blown head gasket can cause this issue. Is this an OVERHEAD VALVE ENGINE or an L-HEAD engine.

The overhead valve engine has the valves in the head and the L-Head engine has the valves in the engine block.

The Overhead valve engines are much more prone to have this issue and will push oil out various places with a blown head gasket.

Also, if you have a LOOSE oil dipstick or dipstick tube.... or if the gasket is not sealing correctly, it will cause oil to be pushed out of many different areas because it looses the vacuum (Negative crankcase compression) and causes the oil to go where it is not supposed to go.
