Hi, let's see if we can work together to get to the root of your problem! will try my best to help!

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question

Do you want the timing for the crankshaft and camshaft gears?

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question

Just two marks, one on crankshaft gear, one on camshaft gear. One will be on the tooth tip, the opposite will be on the base of the tooth, just put the two dots together. If you have a ball bearing crankshaft, the dots align off the left side of the crankshaft ball bearing.

I notice there are three times as many teeth on cam as there are on crank suggesting there are two settings that would be wrong. this cam actually has three marks, two lines and one dot each evenly spaced. I assume one of the cylinders needs to be at TDC when marks align, but I do not know which one is which

No, all you need to do is align the two DOTS>Do not worry about TDC.

I had previously assembled engine, just aligning two dots and kept getting backfiring as if it was seriously out of time. Would you have any suggestions as to the cause of this missfiring?

Did you check the timing key between the flywheel and the crankshaft, that is the only other timing. And did you set the valves at .006 inch while you had it apart?

flywheel to crankshaft key is in place. I saw no adjustment options on valves.

Did you check them for clearance? To adjust, valves have to be removed from the block, and the end ground off!

do both cylinders fire simultaneously? do cylinders fire on every revolution unlike typical 4 cycle engines?

The engine has a single coil with two leads, so both cylinders have spark at the same time. But only the one on the compression stroke fires.
