I sent in a question...
I sent in a question an hour ago and was told 8 minutes for a response. Still no answer. The question was transferred from small engines to small appliances. To be less succinct, I have a Briggs & Stratton model(###) ###-####8 engine on a DR lawn vacuum. When I pulled on the engine's starter rope, the rope would not retract. I replaced the friction plate and the ratchet pawls. One of the pawls will not retract so the starter rope will not retract either. What do I need to do to get both pawls to retract?

Have you removed your rope recoil assembly from your engine?

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
No phone call, just typing, please. Easier to double check again
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

Thanks for your response. The phone call is only optional, and is not needed for you and I. Check to see if the spring is broken or missing on the side that is not retracting.

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
It'll take a few minutes. The spring is intact.
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
The spring is intact.

Thank you for checking. Can you move the pawl back and forth by hand? I am referring to the one you are experiencing problems with.

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
Yah, the pawls move freely.
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
I may have found why a pawl was not retracting. But... I think the pawls are not coming out far enough. When I pull the cord, it is very jerky.
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

You stated that your pawls are not coming out far enough. Are your new pawls the correct ones?

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
I got the part number from partstree.com, but picked up the pawls at a local shop. As far as I know, they are correct.
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

Based upon the date code of your engine, I believe there are two different sets of ratchet pawls.

Can you get the code numbers from your engine?

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
According to the number on the cowling, it is 1220 37 0129 B8
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

Ok, those numbers are your model and type numbers. There should also be some code numbers on your engine.

I just checked at parts tree and I did get the correct pawls.
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

I dropped the 2 pawls on the receivers and put the friction plate on over them.
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

When moving your pawls by hand, when they come around beyond 30 degrees?

Replacing the assembly will cost less than the labor charge at most local repair shops. Just a thought.
