The flooding is likely caused by your carburetor float sticking, or your needle valve is not properly sealing. You will need to clean your carburetor in order to resolve this problem.

We can continue from here.

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
I have already taken off and cleaned the carburetor. removed the carb and bottom nut and spraying the inside with carb cleaner.
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

Thanks for your response. Since cleaning your carburetor did not resolve our problem, it may be best to replace your carburetor.

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
Ok, replaced the carburetor with a brand new B&S carburetor. Now it starts after numerous pulls, but won't run very well and dies often. If you can keep it running long enough to get high rpm and really warm up it will stay running longer. It has something to do with the idle/load speed mechanism self-adjuster, like a throttle governor?.
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

Did you clean your fuel tank before installing your new carburetor?

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
not really. There was not much in the bottom of the tank and the fuel drained out the hose a number of times. But I could give it a rinse just to make certain.
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

The reason I asked is because your new carburetor could possibly have some sediments in the fuel bowl, if you did not clean your fuel tank.

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

Does your carburetor have automatic choke?

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
I understand. but I drained the fuel tank 3 or four times before I installed the carburetor.Yes, it is the automatic choke and automatic idle /throttle/governor with linkage to the back of the mower. It is a Toro B&S 163cc OHV (with personal pace). Purchased just two years ago.
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

I would like for you to check something.

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

Remove your air filter, then check to see if your choke if open or closed. Check this while your engine is cold.

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

Afterwards start your engine, then check to see if your choke is fully opening.

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
Best I can tell the automatic choke for coldstart works pretty well. Once it warms up the thermostat and linkage pushes to the far right
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

You are correct, but is your choke fully opening after your engine reaches operating temperature?

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
I will check all of these things again and let you know
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

Thank you.

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
OK, checked everything and it remains the same. The automatic choke is working and is open when it is running. Once the motor starts and warms up, then it starts to cut out, backfire, and then dies.
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

After your engine dies, how long do you have to wait before your engine will re-start?

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
sometimes it starts right away, most times it starts after about ten minutes.
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

Have you tried a new spark plug?

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
I put in a new spark plug right before I changed the carburetor. it did get pretty fouled because it was flooding, and I tried to clean it up and put it back in.
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

Ok

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

I am wondering if your flywheel key is partially sheared, or if your ignition coil is not working properly.

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

Your carburetor, air filter, and spark plug is new.

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

I would like for you to try something. Start your engine and allow it to run until it begins backfiring and dies. At this point check to see if your choke is fully open at this point.

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
the Coldstart choke is fully open. The other choke and throttle butterfly moves constantly.
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

It is fully open even after your engine dies?

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
the coldstart choke is fully open when it dies. Do you know anything about the spark arrester and screen? Where is the screen located so that I can clean it out?
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
OK, there is no spark arrester on the muffler as I just took it off and and looked at it. Now it will not start at all and is spewing black smoke and carbon out of the muffler. What do you think about getting a new coil? Also I'm going to get another brand new spark plug just in case this one is too fouled?
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

I am back online now. I would try a new spark plug first. If it does not resolve our problem, then I would consider your ignition coil as possibly being at fault.

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
Ok, I went and bought another plug and will install it tonight.
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

Very good! Hopefully your new plug works for you.

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
Sadly the new spark plug made very little difference. Yes, it started right away but then died after the mower got hot again.
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
basically, after a new spark plug, air filter, and carburetor, the mower is still doing what it did when I started.
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

Are you familiar with checking for spark to your spark plug?

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

Immediately after your engine dies, check to see if you are still getting spark to your spark plug.

Ask Your Own Small Engine Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
Ok, i will do so.
Technician: Donald, Small Engine Technician replied 8 months ago

Thanks!
