I have recently acquired a 2004 Guardian 15kw serial number

Customer Question

I have recently acquired a 2004 Guardian 15kw serial number(###) ###-#### Set up for LP. The issues I'm having is that it starts just fine but only runs for about 10-12 seconds before shutting off. I originally thought low oil pressure but have ruled out the pressure switch. Also I can get the external GFI button to reset and have no power because of that. It is NOT hooked up to my home yet so I don't know if that may have some effect on it or not.

Hello, my name is ***** ***** I am going to assist you with this.

The external GFCI will not reset unless the unit is running, and producing power.

When the unit shuts down, which fault lights come on at the control panel?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I will try and find time this afternoon to check it. At work now and still have a lot of clean up from the hurricane
Expert:  Hank F. replied 1 month ago.

No problem at all.

Although I can't possibly be online 24/7, I am online almost every day.

I understand and it is not an emergency, I have a gas generator that I'm running right now. Usually I'm the one everybody calls with small engine and electrical questions, I'm excellent on mowers chainsaws weedeaters and generator engines but I've have never worked on one like this. I'll get back with you ASAP
Expert:  Hank F. replied 1 month ago.

That's no problem. I am a certified Generac technician - I work on them all the time.

I know enough to know when I'm out of my league. I'm on Millwright by trade but started on small engines out of high school and did that for about 10 years

Ok.

All five lights are flashing. green LED flashing for no utility sense and four flashing red LEDs for exerciser not set. Is there anyway to bypass the utilities sinse mode ?
Expert:  Hank F. replied 1 month ago.

If all lights are flashing, it is because the exercise timer is not set.

You can bypass the exercise timer simply by setting the switch to the MANUAL setting.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I have it on the manual setting on the rocker switch. Starts runs about 10 seconds and shuts off automatically restarts after about 20 seconds and repeats until I return switch to off.
Expert:  Hank F. replied 1 month ago.

OK.

The problem is probably that the genset is not producing power.

Lets start by resetting the controller.

Set the switch to OFF.

Pull the fuse out of the control panel.

Normally, you only need to wait 10 seconds to put the fuse back in, but use this time to connect a voltmeter across the input side of the 2 circuit breakers.

Install the fuse, and set the switch to MANUAL.

How much voltage is it producing in the 10 seconds it will run?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Less than a volt. .456
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
456 between the two 110 legs and .22 from each hot to neutral
Expert:  Hank F. replied 1 month ago.

Ok.

I have uploaded some tests for you to do.

Please do all of the steps in Test 4 - Fixed Excitation, and let me know all the results.

When giving the results, please give me the wire numbers, not the step numbers.

IE - say "wire 2 to 6 gave 35VAC", not "step 5 gave 35VAC".

This makes it much easier and quicker for me to analyze the results.

Ok I'll try to get that tomorrow. Got go work on sister in laws car in the morning
Expert:  Hank F. replied 1 month ago.

No problem. I have to work a 13 hour shift tomorrow, and won't be home until the evening anyhow.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I work 12 hour shifts but I'm on my 7 off so I know long days too. I appreciate the help like I said before I'm usually the one everyone turns to for help so I know the aggravation of trying to diagnose problems with out being able to put your hands on it.
Expert:  Hank F. replied 1 month ago.

Yeah, 12 hour shifts bite. We work a 3-2-2, though, not 7 straight.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
4 nights off 3, 3 days off 1, 3 nights off 3, 4 days off 7. A little hard to get used to but I love it
Expert:  Hank F. replied 1 month ago.

Ok.

Expert:  Hank F. replied 1 month ago.

Have you done those tests yet?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Not yet I will try this afternoon
Expert:  Hank F. replied 1 month ago.
Ok

OK.

Customer: replied 26 days ago.
Sorry it took me so long.
Wire 2&6 .274 ( wire 2 in diagram was labeled 162 on gen )
Wire 11&22 .223
Wire 4&15 static amp draw 1.42
Wire 4&15 running amp draw. .000
Expert:  Hank F. replied 26 days ago.

That's ok, I was on vacation for a week, and didn't have internet access.

You tested across the wrong wires, though.

There is both a 2 and a 162 at the excitation breaker - you must disconnect wire 2 to test. Wire 6 comes off the voltage regulator.

Customer: replied 26 days ago.
The wire #162 was plugged into the bottom terminal that should have been wire #2 on voltage regulator according to the diagram. I will look again this afternoon
Customer: replied 26 days ago.
The wires on my voltage regulator are (from top to bottom) 11,22,4,0,6,162
Expert:  Hank F. replied 26 days ago.

Yes, that is correct.

But wire 2 does not go to the voltage regulator - it goes to the DPE breaker.

You need to disconnect wire 2 from the DPE breaker.

Customer: replied 26 days ago.
Ok. I was going by the picture and steps in the information that you had sent me. I will locate #2 tonight and try again.
Customer: replied 25 days ago.
Wire 2&6 .275
Wire 11&22 .222
Wire 4&15 static amp draw 1.3
Wire 4&15 running amp draw .00
Expert:  Hank F. replied 25 days ago.

Sorry, I ended up having to work until after 10 last night, and was only running on 4 hours sleep from the night before.

The amp draw is a problem.

I am going to be uploading 3 more tests for you to do, but I won't be able to get them printed out until this evening.

Customer: replied 25 days ago.
That's fine. I'm on days this week and won't be home until about 7 this evening. Can I go ahead and do your ratings so you can get paid for this or do I need to wait until we figure out the problem?
Thanks again for the help
Expert:  Hank F. replied 25 days ago.

You rate when you are ready. The choice of when is completely up to you.

Customer: replied 19 days ago.
Do you think it could just be the sliprings need to be cleaned? I just did that to my Onan gen in my motor home last month.
Expert:  Hank F. replied 19 days ago.

They are a possibility.

Customer: replied 15 days ago.
Did you ever get a chance to download those other 3 tests?
Expert:  Hank F. replied 15 days ago.

Sorry, somehow your question got misplaced, and I couldn't find it on my list. I'm glad you responded.

I need you to check the brushes and the slip rings.

Please do Tests 9 and 10 of the upload.

Click here to download the tests.

You will also need the disassembly instructions to be able to get to the slip rings.

Customer: replied 15 days ago.
Thanks. I start my 7 off this Thursday so I will get on it asap
Expert:  Hank F. replied 15 days ago.

Ok.
