I have a John Deere generator (DP 6000) about 9 years old. It has a Kohler 12 hp motor with High/low idle.
JA: What's the make and model of the generator? And can you guesstimate how old it is?
Customer: Upon every start up it will go back and forth , four times , before settling on low idle. then its good to go. Why does it oscilate upon start up???
JA: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?
Customer: Yes.
JA: Anything else we should know to help you best?
Customer: It is consistant in oscilating four times. everytime.

Hello, my name is ***** ***** I am going to assist you with this.

There are a couple of things that can cause this:

1. Choke may be slightly out of adjustment/slow to react.

2. Carb may be slightly out of adjustment, or may have an fuel circuit with slight blockage.

However, if it only does it 4 times, it is nothing to worry about. Some engines are just cold blooded. This is the reason a genset should be allowed to run at least 30 seconds before a load is applied - to allow the engine to settle in to it's normal rhythm.
