I have a Stihl chainsaw. It will only start for a VERY short

Customer Question

I have a Stihl chainsaw. It will only start for a VERY short time when I put fuel/oil mix either directly into the chamber under the spark plug or into the carbureator after pulling the air cleaner. I have taken the fuel line out of the fuel tank and it is not plugged or broken. Suggestions?Scott

How long has it been since your saw last started up and continued to run?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Ran it this spring. Have been unable to start it since June. Hasn't been a priority to get it fixed prior to now. Have checked the fuel line since then to make sure it was in operable condition

Thanks for your response. How old is the fuel mixture you are using?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
The fuel is new this summer

I have also completely emptied the chainsaw fuel tank the last 2 times I used t this spring and put fresh in on the next use

Have you replaced the fuel filter that is inside your fuel tank?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
It was in good shape and the flow was unimpeded when I checked the fuel line this summer
Expert:  Donald replied 1 month ago.

Based upon what you and I have covered, it is very likely that you will need to clean and rebuild your carburetor or replace it.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Thanks for the info. I have cleaned the carburetor. The interesting thing is the saw started up just fine the last time I used it but wouldn't start there after
Expert:  Donald replied 1 month ago.

You are very welcome! There is a screen inside your carburetor. It may need to be replaced.

Expert:  Donald replied 1 month ago.

The screen will appear to be shiny and clean, but will be completely clogged.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Thanks. I will look into it and get it cleaned

I should now within a week. Thank you

You are welcome! Take your time. I would also replace the fuel filter, although it appear to be ok.
