Customer Question

My mower is smoking up. It did it once before but that was from putting in too much oil. I feel like it is going to blow up,
JA: What's the make and model of the mower? And can you guesstimate how old it is?
Customer: Just a sec let me go look
JA: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?
Customer: Craftsman Briggs & Stratton Platinum 7.25
JA: Anything else we should know to help you best?
Customer: I think that is it. It has plenty of oil and gas (probably in dire need of a tune up though).

What color is the smoke?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Donald,I am a female (my husband has Alzheimer's), but I feel like I just got scammed as they said the charge is only $5 and then when I went through the hoops it jumped to $24.
Expert:  Donald replied 1 month ago.

Hello. Our site is not a scam. I am a real technician.

Expert:  Donald replied 1 month ago.

The $24.00 is for the use of our phone call option. The phone call is only optional. If you like, we can continue on this chat page.

OK, waiting for your call

Do you still want me to give you a call?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
OK, the smoke is white and LOTS of it
Expert:  Donald replied 1 month ago.

Was your engine smoking prior to you adding too much oil?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
No disregard the call, but ok with technical help online.
Expert:  Donald replied 1 month ago.

No problem. Online help will work just fine for you.

Expert:  Donald replied 1 month ago.

Are you saying no to the smoke prior to you adding too much oil?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
No.
Expert:  Donald replied 1 month ago.

How did you remove the additional oil from your engine?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I didn't remove oil. It didn't overflow. I know that previously when we filled the oil very full it smoked just like now, but eventually it worked it's way through it. But, this smoke seems much worse.
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I am not even positive it is oil related, just guessing since it happened before.
Expert:  Donald replied 1 month ago.

It is very likely that your engine still has too much oil. If your oil level is too far over the full mark on your dipstick, this can cause white smoke.

Expert:  Donald replied 1 month ago.

Have you tilted your mower recently?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
OK, give me a second and let me go measure it.
Expert:  Donald replied 1 month ago.

Take your time.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I can't tell if it is too full. There is no full line marker on the dip stick.
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Will it smoke if the stick is not screwed all the way in?
Expert:  Donald replied 1 month ago.

Yes, your engine can smoke if your dipstick is not screwed all the way in.

Expert:  Donald replied 1 month ago.

Your dipstick has to be tight ...

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
OK, let me put it back in and let you know.
Expert:  Donald replied 1 month ago.

Thanks!

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Problem solved. Expensive human error.
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
For future reference how much oil should I put in as it doesn't have a "fill" line
Expert:  Donald replied 1 month ago.

Thanks for checking.

Expert:  Donald replied 1 month ago.

Your engine requires 20 oz. of engine oil.
