Customer Question

What do charge for advice?
JA: I'll do all I can to help. How long have you been dealing with this?
Customer: I have a Kohler cv16 engine that has low top end rpms. I have installed a new carb, replaced fuel lines, adusted governor and tuned up. No change alsobh
JA: Can you guesstimate how old the engine is? And has it done anything like this in the past?
Customer: Don't know how old engine is. The engine is on a John Deere lawn tractor
JA: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?
Customer: Yes
JA: Anything else we should know to help you best?

Do you have good rpm before engaging blades? Are the deck pulley and blades moving freely, if you check them with engine OFF and not engaged? Is the throttle cable opening the flap in the carburetor fully?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Not good eough rpms. Also drops when transmission is engage
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 month ago.

Can you get rpm up if you manually move throttle at the carburetor?

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 month ago.

CV16, do you have pulse fuel pump or the can driven fuel pump mounted to block? Maybe fuel pump is weak, and not delivering enough fuel?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
test
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 month ago.

1/4 cup in 15 seconds cranking. , at line at carburetor.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Has a new fuel pump. Ran a fuel line from a gas can to the carb. No diffrence. I thought a new pump and new hose, and gravity fed fuel source from a fuel can would make a difference, but it did not

Is the throttle flap in carburetor opening fully with throttle cable? Can you get rpm up by moving throttle lever at carburetor?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
The flap is open. If I move it any further it goes to choke
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 month ago.

Are you looking at the throttle flap or the choke flap?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
On this model tractor if you go past the high throttle it closes the flap and creates a choke.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 month ago.

Gotcha, same as Briggs. So is governor link capable of opening the throttle flap ? Have you check compression on engine, maybe just too weak to run mower!

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I would agree with what you said. However, the engine seems to have low rpms. If the Rpms were raised some how it would be fine. My experience of owning other lawn tractors tells me the rpms are low. I don't here the governor trying to compensate for the load
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Engine sounds like its at half speed
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 month ago.

I you manually move the governor link, will engine rev up? Usually if governor fails, it lets engine run at too high an rpm, not low rpm.

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 month ago.

You have service manual? Link here.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I have a service manual
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I can move the governer manualy it does the same
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 month ago.

OK< section 5 shows the governor linkage and springs.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
sir
I adjusted the governor according to the manual. Moved the position of the spring to different holes on the linkage no difference
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Adjusted high speed figure 5-22 according to manual
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 month ago.

You keep avoiding the question as to whether you can rev engine higher manually.??

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Sorry
No engine will not rev higher manually
Same rpms manually or with throttle control
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I thought I had answered the question
"I can move the governer manualy it does the same"
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 month ago.

Have you checked the timing key between flywheel and crankshaft? Engine may be out of time.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I have not checked timing.
I will check timing after I get off work.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 month ago.

Has to be sometime other than the carburetor and governor causing power loss and not reving up! Thanks.
