Customer Question

My Briggs & Stratton 6.75hp engine was running fine and after I shut it off it won't start.I checked the spark plug and it seems to be sparking(I am going to replace it while I'm troubleshooting.) I removed the air filter and sprayed a little either into the carberator no luck it seems to be backburping through the carb. Any suggestions?
JA: Can you guesstimate how old the engine is? And has it done anything like this in the past?
Customer: 4-5 YEARS OLD AND NO ALWAYS STARTED ON SECOND PULL
JA: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?
Customer: Right now if it isn't too complicated.
JA: Anything else we should know to help you best?
Customer: It's got gas and a new air cleaner.

When cranking, does it seem to be too easy to pull? Indicating a problem with valve stuck open?

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
No regular tension when pulled.

Has spark, and will not fire on starting fluid, and seems to be backfiring through the carburetor.?? If you remove the spark plug and hold finger with rag over the spark lug hole, does it have enough compression to move your finger?

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
I'll have to find someone to help me with that.I have long arms but not that long.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 10 months ago.

Or use a compression gage!

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
Didn't seem to move much air out the sparkplug hole.

I'm thinking you have a valve that is not fully closing! This is the OHV engine? If so, you can remove the valve cover and check the valves.

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
if I got a hold of a compression guage what reading should I get?
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 10 months ago.

I would expect about 80 psi. Less than 60 and engine is not going to start.

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
Thanks it looks like I got a little mechanic work to do.
