I have an 18 hp Briggs engine on a Craftsman lawn tractor, it wouldn't start. I charged the battery, & replaced the fuel filter. It started right away, but was blowing oil out the breather into the air filter housing then stalled. Any suggestions?
JA: Do you have fuel in the tank? If so, is the shut-off valve open and the fuel clean?
Customer: There is fuel in the tank Its not equipped with a shut off valve
JA: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?
Customer: Yes
JA: Anything else we should know to help you best?

Hi I'm Wayne

I will help you with this

what you are describing is a piston ring may have broke,or worn

loosen the oil fill cap with it idling, if a lot of oil splashes out

then yes it is a piston ring, use a Rag over it

I hope this helped you

JA site has a issue

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
Sorry for the delay in answering. I c'ked the compression, 100 in 1 cyl , 105 in the other. I spoke to a man in NAPA. He asked if the oil was overfull which it was. He stated the carburator float valve wasprobably bad , allowing excees fuel to drain into the crankcase, thanks to the ethanol laced fuel. I changed the oil which was very diluted by fuel. I picked up a carburator kit & the problem is now solved. In closing , thank you for your attention to my problem. Yours Truly, ***** ***** Chestertown, NY
