Customer Question

I have a craftsman garden lawn tractor model no 91728746. I clipped the top of a tree root while mowing. Bent the center blade but did not shear the gear the blade attaches too. When I try to start the engine I hear a loud click noise from the engine as soon as you turn the start switch. I removed the starter and checked it, it turned when I jumped it with cables. Cleaned the battery cables and ensured I was getting 12 volts from the battery. I rotated the engine from the bolt on top of the engine. It is not locked up also removed the v-belt to ensure I didn't have a weak starter. The click noise comes from the engine, like a safety switch. Not sure what to check next.
JA: Do you have fuel in the tank? If so, is the shut-off valve open and the fuel clean?
Customer: yes. The click noise is coming from the engine
JA: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?
Customer: yes
JA: Anything else we should know to help you best?
Customer: I best described the situation

What is battery voltage when you turn the key to start and you get the click? Does voltage drop from around 12.5 to 9 vols?

?

No

No voltage drop? If you go to the starter solenoid, and jump the battery cable terminal, to the single switch wire terminal, does the engine spin?

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
No voltage drop, engine clicks clicks so as you turn the key
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 10 months ago.

Rapid clicking if you hold key at start?

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 10 months ago.

Are you testing with a voltmeter?

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
No one single click

Using a voltmeter

And if you jump the starter solenoid does engine spin?

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 10 months ago.

What does battery voltage read?

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
Jumped the starter, it spins. Battery voltage is 12.45
Customer: replied 10 months ago.
Is there a safety switch for the engine
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 10 months ago.

Safety switch is seat and brake and pto switch. This click you hear is when key is flipped on and off?Or at start position? On and off can be the fuel solenoid in the carburetor clicking. You didn't damage the wires to the blade switch when you hit root?

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 10 months ago.

How did you jump the solenoid to get engine to spin? Across the two cable terminls, or the battery termial to the switch terminal?

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
Click I hear is when key is turned to on position. Happens instantly
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 10 months ago.

So likely the fuel solenoid. Safety switch would not click.

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
Click noise comes from the engine
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 10 months ago.

Fuel solenoid is on the engine, is it making this noise?

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
How do I check fuel solenoid
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 10 months ago.

You would feel the fuel solenoid and if it clicks when you turn key on, it is ok. It is not causing the probelm. No start is likley a seat switch or other safety switch not completing the circuit for start.

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
Where would be another safety switch
